2019 Event Volunteer Opportunities
You've received the 2019 TGHS Calendar, and now its your opportunity to get involved. TGHS would not be successful without volunteers and we're seeking your help. Read all about it and sign up for anything that may interest you! There is a wide range of activities to fit your schedule and skill set, while engaging with like-minded members of the community. From preservation projects to planning a top-notch event at a historic home or even planning for next year, we have just the thing for you. Let's collaborate!
ANNUAL HOME TOUR
The Home Tour each fall is a signature event that draws hundreds of visitors from throughout the region. We utilize dozens of volunteers in a variety of roles, mostly on tour day in September plus a training day prior to the event. One of the perks of being a volunteer is that you get to see the tour houses during training and/or on tour day during unassigned hours. Volunteers are also invited to an after-party at one of the tour homes. Volunteer opportunities include docents with major or minor speaking roles, directional guides, and logistical set-up and tear-down. Other roles requiring additional time commitments include historic research and planning the after-tour party. Overseeing it all, a Home Tour Committee meets a few times at the beginning of the year to design and plan the overall event.

DOCTORS HOUSE DOCENT
Share the Doctors House experience with others. For as few as 2 hours a month, after some training, you can feel the gratification of leading docent led tours through this unique Victorian-era museum.
OUTREACH / EDUCATION
TGHS shares its love of preservation through talks and walks. New ideas can be launched or prior programs can be repeated. Neighborhood walking tours and lectures on genealogy and neon art are examples of past educational programming. Click if you’re interested in coming up with ideas and/or heading up one or more programs.
Are you interested in preserving the architectural and historic character of Glendale’s older, established neighborhoods? Historic Districts - also known as historic preservation overlay zones - help residents protect and maintain the charm and appearance of their community. Glendale currently has seven historic districts, but we know that there are many more neighborhoods that qualify for designation. Let us know if you are interested in assisting residents with the application process, which may include identifying eligible areas and proposed district boundaries, conducting historic research, taking photographs and engaging in public outreach.
Every older home or building has a story to tell. If you are someone who enjoys digging in and uncovering a property's history, then we've got a task for you! Occasionally, research is needed to identify the names of architects and builders as well as establish ownership history for home tours, landmark nominations and historic district applications. Sometimes, discovering that a person who contributed to Glendale's early heritage was an occupant can be enough to save a property from demolition or significant alteration. TGHS will provide you with all the guidance you need to thoroughly research historic properties.
Do you have a passion for preservation? If so, we need you! TGHS is well known for its advocacy, in both public policy and direct intervention to save historic resources. A few of our successes to date include: Adams Square Gas Station, Alex Theatre, Doctors House, Goode House, Grand Central Air Terminal, Glendale Federal Building, and Wallace House at Glendale Heritage Garden. Some of the work the Preservation Advocacy Committee does on a regular basis includes: commenting on proposed projects involving historic resources; identifying and suggesting preservation alternatives on proposed development projects; writing in to City Council, Historic Preservation Commission and Design Review Board or speaking at public meetings; reaching out to property owners about landmark designation; providing resources and assistance to residents who want to properly restore their homes; helping residents preserve the unique character of their neighborhoods through historic districts; and encouraging stronger polices and incentives for historic preservation.
Corporate/Business sponsors, endowment gifts, and legacy gifts guarantee the future of TGHS. We need members to help identify candidates for these sponsorships and gifts.
MEMBERSHIP / OUTREACH
This group meets a few times throughout the year to work toward our goal of 1000 members. Previous outreach efforts included gift memberships and delivering potted succulents to our newest neighbors in Glendale. This is a great group for creatives and social butterflies!
ARCHIVING / ORGANIZATION
No skeletons, but TGHS has an attic full of files and artifacts that need to be organized, scanned, purged. Helpers can focus on a small portion or take on a greater organizational role.
LABEL AND STAMP BRIGADE
Even in this age of technology, TGHS prints and mails notices a few times throughout the year. If you sign up we’ll contact you from time to time to label, stamp, and take a batch to the Post Office.
Undergraduate and graduate students are invited to work with their university or college faculty and TGHS on "for-credit" internships. Opportunities are available on numerous hands-on projects involving research of individual houses and historic neighborhoods, landmark designation nominations, and educational programs and outreach. Interns are expected to conform to university course standards, generally spending a minimum of 8 hours per week during the enrolled semester or quarter. Successful candidates must be detailed-oriented, self-motivated and possess strong organizational skills.
