Before you hire a contractor, verify the contractor is licensed and insured by visiting cslb.ca.gov. By law, anyone who contracts for or bids on a construction project valued at $1,000 or more (combined labor and material costs) must be licensed by the Contractors State License Board (CSLB).

It is always wise to get more than one estimate. Be skeptical of recommendations that insist upon replacing historic elements without considering restoration. While sometimes this is necessary, restoration of historic features is preferred, is often of higher quality and may cost less than replacement.
